About Rémy Sealey

Seeking sound has always been at the core of my being.

My sonic education started with music at the CAMMAC music centre in the Laurentians in Quebec. Thanks to the Carl Orff teaching method for children, I quickly became infatuated with world percussion, in particular Balinese Gamelan.  I learned to "communicate" rhythmically, as a language of sorts.

Later, my passion evolved into the wondrous, whacky world of turntablism, fostered by a wide gamut of sounds emanating from the Beastie Boys, Mixmaster MikeQ-Bert and Kid Koala.

Since no turntablism or world-percussion programs existed in high-school in 2000, I decided to study classical percussion and drumming. I achieved a college degree in music (Vanier) and during my studies I gained professional experience as a drummer for various bands.

My time in college was punctuated by a passion for meditation and the study of self-awareness. My musical tastes shifted towards more introverted styles (Amon Tobin, Burial, Flying Lotus), and with these, the terrain was set for me to shift from the stage to the studio.

It became apparent to me that sound, in and of itself, was what I loved the most about music. Mixing and mastering felt like a holistic skill to hone, where my interest for awareness intersected with my passion for sound and music.

I became interested in electroacoustics at Université de Montreal before deciding to focus on creating personal projects, kicking off Klatu and working on sound for film at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Concordia, as well as for animation projects in the art department.

Soon after a successful first album, and thanks to industrious and ambitious friends in the world of cinema and animation, I began work as a professional sound designer and mixing engineer. I gained skill across all aspects of audio production, from recording on-set, to editing and mixing, to shipping a mastered product.

It was with a head start in the industry that I finally got a degree in Audio Production Techniques at Musitechnic in Montreal.

I have since been working full time in a professional post-production studio in Montreal, working on material for broadcast/TV/radio and web advertisment.

In addition to film, I also continue to publish music as Klatu. I'm also very lucky to be the mixing engineer for an amazing alt-rock band, Oaks Above.
